Teaching Philosophy

As in performing, I view teaching as an additional way to share the joy of music with others. With so many things competing for our time and effort, music is definitely the global language that a person can appreciate in solitude or with others throughout their life and I enjoy helping each student navigate their way through this marvelous realm.

My studio is a kaleidoscope of ages, 8 to 83 years old, encompassing many different personalities and energy levels. This is what makes teaching so enjoyable. I work with each student as an individual, so my coaching method is adapted to their particular personality and unique learning style.

My goal as an educator is to assist each student in finding their "voice", therefor lessons focus on tone production, proper finger technique, rhythmic structure and musicianship. As part of their musical development, each student is also taught to research and learn about the repertoire they are studying, and they are provided with resources to locate information that is of interest to themselves and their audience. Performing in any capacity, especially chamber music with peers, is highly encouraged, as is participating in large ensembles, flute choirs and competitions so students may share their love of music with others while gaining confidence in presentation and public speaking skills. Learning to play a musical instrument well takes consistent practice and a certain resolve. My responsibility to my students is to guide them through the learning process so they are cognizant of their improvement as it happens and will be inspired and encouraged to continue, regardless their age or musical level. Dedication in practice to advance musical skills also teaches tenacity which leads ultimately to satisfaction for a job well done.

My students have participated in and/or have won prizes in these excellent organizations:

NYSSMA State and District ensembles, Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonia, Hochstein Honors Program, Hochstein Merit Scholarship Competition, Genessee Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition, Rochester Flute Association Flute Fair Competition, Rochester Flute Association Flute Camp, Ithaca College Flute Camp, Mansfield University Flute Camp, Indiana University Summer Music Clinic.

Many of my students have gone on to further their music studies at Nazareth College, SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Potsdam and Ithaca College.
